Virgil Van Dijk has shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s win over Real Madrid and that Conor Bradley tackle on Kylian Mbappe.
Liverpool enjoyed another impressive outing on Wednesday, defeating reigning UEFA Champions League champions Real Madrid 2-0 to maintain a 100% winning rate in the competition.
It was a perfect night for Liverpool as they dominated the game from start to finish.
Although Alexis Mac Allister, who scored Liverpool’s opener, was awarded the official Man of the Match award, several players were outstanding for the Reds.
Goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher saved a Kylian Mbappe penalty to preserve Liverpool’s lead and keep his third clean sheet in the Champions League this season, while Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones produced another solid display in Liverpool’s midfield.
However, Conor Bradley was arguably the biggest talk of the night.
The Northern Irishman, who was deputising for Trent Alexander-Arnold, made his Champions League debut on the night and produced a display full of confidence and quality.
The 21-year-old won his battle with Kylian Mbappe, and his strong first-half tackle on the Frenchman was the highlight of his performance.
With Mbappe racing on goal on a counter after a cleared Liverpool corner, Bradley produced an excellent sliding tackle that stopped the attacker from going one-on-one with Kelleher, helping to keep Liverpool level.
Liverpool fans in the stadium showed their approval and celebrated the tackle like a goal.
Van Dijk was asked what he thinks of Bradley’s tackle and its significance on the game’s result.
What Virgil Van Dijk said about Conor Bradley’s tackle
Speaking to Optus Sport on Youtube, Van Dijk was asked if he enjoyed ‘that Conor Bradley tackle on Kylian Mbappe’, and he outlined how significant the challenge was for the game’s overall mood.
“It was a very important tackle,” he said.
“Obviously, it ignited the fans a little bit as well, and it was a great tackle.
“What can I say? He did very well there.
Asked how important the moment was in a big game, Van Dijk said:
“I think first and foremost it is important to defuse the situation, to make sure you win the ball.
In such a big game like this, we all know that these little moments, big tackles, but little moments could change the direction of the game or get the extra spark that is maybe needed during a difficult game.
“I think we controlled the game yesterday, so it wasn’t needed in that sense?
But obviously, it lifted the fans in a way that was quite special.”
Although Bradley had an outstanding night, his night ended rather disappointingly as he was subbed in the 87th minute after going down with a suspected hamstring injury.
Although Arne Slot has yet to confirm the extent of his injury, a report from Paul Joyce yesterday claimed that the defender could miss most of Liverpool’s December games due to the injury.
