Liverpool faced West Ham in an intense battle this afternoon.
The Reds went into the game requiring just three wins from their remaining seven Premier League games to be named as the new champions of the division.
The home side started the game well, as Mohamed Salah’s pinpoint pass across the box found Luis Diaz who put Liverpool in front.
However, West Ham grew into the game and had a much better second half and disaster struck in the 86th minute as a mix-up at the back led to a Virgil van Dijk clearance ricocheting off Andy Robertson and into the back of the net.
A nightmare scenario for the Reds.
But the intensity multiplied after that goal and Virgil van Dijk saved the day with a strong header from a corner to win the game for Liverpool.
An immediate response from Liverpool that puts them within touching distance of winning the Premier League.
What makes that goal by van Dijk even more special is that it was his 100th appearance as captain of Liverpool Football Club today.
Virgil van Dijk reacted to the Robertson own-goal and his winner after the game.
He said: “I heard him shout.
I am very happy to captain my 100th game for Liverpool, it was an emotional day with Hillsborough and that was the main focus.
One step closer to all our dreams.”
A crowning moment to top off an already important day for him and his club.
Van Dijk also provided a contract update.
Whilst Fabrizio Romano confirmed it earlier this week, we are still waiting on official confirmation from the club.
“Everybody knows I love this club… let’s see what next week looks like!”
Liverpool fans will be hoping the announcement comes sooner rather than later after another stunning performance from Virgil van Dijk today.
