Virgil van Dijk has admitted the "damage was done" in the first leg as Liverpool were knocked out of the Europa League, despite a 1-0 win over Atalanta.

The game was Jurgen Klopp's final European fixture in charge of the club and Mohamed Salah's early penalty was unable to spark a comeback.

Liverpool were beaten 3-0 in the first leg at Anfield and Atalanta ultimately triumphed 3-1 on aggregate, setting up a semi-final clash against Marseille.

"First, credit to Atalanta, the damage was done last week and we were very poor," Van Dijk told TNT Sports.

And while Liverpool may now be out of Europe, Van Dijk has urged the Reds to put the disappointing result behind them ahead of their return to Premier League action on Sunday.
