Liverpool and Netherlands defender Virgil van Dijk has admitted he has had a poor start to the season and claimed he feels an extra weight of responsibility as a leader for both his club and country.

But the centre-back was confident he was on course to returning to form after his country’s 2-0 Nations League victory over Poland.

Liverpool have managed just two clean sheets in all competitions and Jurgen Klopp’s side have been criticised for not being at their best so far this season.

Van Dijk, 31, has started in every match so far in 2022-23 and he admits that he hasn’t performed as well this season.

He said: “I know I could have done better in the beginning of the season.

I’m not naive about that.

I know very well when I make mistakes.
