Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has offered important advice to 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha following the young winger’s historic debut for the Reds. Ngumoha scored the winning goal in the 100th minute against Newcastle, becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer and the fourth youngest in Premier League history. Van Dijk praised Ngumoha's talent and highlighted the significance of such an achievement at a young age.
In an interview, Van Dijk emphasized the need for Ngumoha to cherish this milestone without taking it for granted. He advised the teenager to stay motivated, continue working hard, and maintain humility moving forward. Van Dijk explained, “It all starts now. He has to keep working hard and stay humble but definitely have to enjoy this because these nights, you can’t take them for granted if you’re in his position.” He also encouraged Ngumoha to learn from the experienced players in Liverpool’s squad and handle the challenges both on and off the pitch to build a successful career.
Liverpool’s manager, Jürgen Klopp, also praised Ngumoha’s composure and finishing ability, calling his goal “great for a 16-year-old” and noting the youngster’s confidence and quick thinking on the field.
Van Dijk, meanwhile, dismissed concerns about Liverpool’s defense after conceding two goals from set-pieces against Newcastle. He stated that the team performed well overall but acknowledged the goals gave Newcastle belief late in the game.
This guidance from Van Dijk underlines his leadership role within Liverpool as he supports and nurtures emerging talent like Ngumoha while managing team expectations.
