Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning free-kick against Arsenal has been the talk of the town since Liverpool's late winner at Anfield a fortnight ago.

It was going to take something special to separate two of this season's main title contenders in a fixture where there had been little between the sides and few chances - and Szoboszlai duly delivered.

His dipping, bending effort from 30 yards curled away from Arsenal keeper David Raya before going in off the post to send Anfield into raptures.

But Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admitted Szoboszlai's special effort is still not the best free-kick he has seen live.

In a poll of Liverpool players at the club's AXA training base this week, almost all of the players asked opted for their team-mate's wonder strike against the Gunners, which earned Szoboszlai the Goal of the Month award for August - the first time it had ever been won by a Hungarian.

New signings Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman all voted Szoboszlai, while Federico Chiesa, Alexis Mac Allister, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Trey Nyoni agreed.

Club-record signing Alexander Isak showed his confidence by opting for "one of my own" - although the striker can perhaps be forgiven as he wasn't at Anfield for Szoboszlai's winner.

At the opposite end of the modest spectrum, Szoboszlai - who has also scored his fair share of outstanding free-kicks for Hungary - did not give himself the nod, instead going for Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic free-kick for Manchester United against Portsmouth in 2008.

But rather than give his backing to his team-mate, too, Liverpool captain Van Dijk plumped for Ronaldo's longtime rival Lionel Messi instead.

"Unfortunately the one that Leo Messi scored against us, in the Camp Nou," he said, referring to the Argentinian's delicious strike in Barcelona's 3-0 first leg win over Liverpool in the 2018-19 Champions League semi-finals.

In Van Dijk's defence, he was not the only one to overlook Szoboszlai's cracker, with Andy Robertson selecting Shunsuke Nakamura's free-kick for Celtic against Manchester United in 2006.

Ryan Gravenberch wasn't included in the video posted on Liverpool's X account, but the Dutchman already gave his glowing verdict in the immediate aftermath of the win over Arsenal.

"I think I never saw a free-kick this beautiful in my life," Gravenberch said

"It was really amazing."

Reds boss Arne Slot was equally impressed, adding: "We needed a moment of magic - and that's what we got from Dominik Szoboszlai with an unbelievable strike."
