Virgil van Dijk has been linked to a surprising move to Borussia Dortmund ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Mirror reported today that the 32-year-old has plenty of admirers across Europe, with Dortmund thought to be one of the clubs most keen on his services.
Van Dijk, who will be 33 in July, has been one of the best defenders in the world following his 2018 transfer from Southampton.
He, alongside Alisson Becker, were really the signings that turned Liverpool from a good team into a great one.
Now six years into his Anfield career, it seems that the Dutchman is at a crossroads on Merseyside – to continue with Arne Slot and Liverpool or to seek pastures anew.
Now, SportBILD have addressed these claims made by the Mirror.
Virgil van Dijk to Borussia Dortmund explained
The first thing BILD establish is that Borussia Dortmund are indeed looking for a new defender.
Veteran Mats Hummels, 35, is unlikely to receive a new contract from Dortmund – with his deal expiring at the end of this current season.
Van Dijk who has made 45 competitive appearances this season and is still a crucial player for Liverpool as he showed this season.
BILD suggest that the Dutchman earns about 13 million euros in salary per annum.
In contrast, Dortmund’s highest-paid player, Niklas Süle (28), is earns around 11 million euros.
This means that he will easily become Dortmund’s top earner should a move materialze.
However, his salary demands will likely exceed what the Bundesliga club can offer, with BILD stating that ‘a van Dijk transfer would be economically difficult to realize.’
Furthermore, new chief Lars Ricken, along with Kehl and Mislintat, aims to rejuvenate the squad this summer by focusing on acquiring promising young talents as opposed to established stars with a limited time left at the top-level.
Basically, the slant is that the van Dijk to Borussia Dortmund talk is just that: talk.
There is nothing concrete behind it despite the report from The Mirror.
Nevertheless, the BILD finish off with a caveat of some sort, writing:
“Dortmund also needs an experienced component for a title squad, and secondly, for internationalisation, finally a big name again.”
“One thing is certain: the name van Dijk would definitely electrify BVB fans!”
Liverpool fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
Virgil van Dijk is set to remain at Anfield for at least another season.
However, Richard Hughes and co?
will have to make a decision on his contract situation soon.
