Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool Must Sign a Forward
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emphasized the urgent need for the club to sign a forward this summer to strengthen the attacking options. Despite Liverpool's significant investment in new players during the 2025–26 transfer window, including the exciting acquisition of striker Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt, van Dijk highlighted the importance of further reinforcing the forward line to maintain Liverpool's ambitions.
Van Dijk praised the quality of the new signings and commended how well they have settled into the squad, noting that the players understand the hard work required at Liverpool. He conveyed a message to the newcomers, saying, "The hard work starts now" and that each player must "work their socks off" to be impactful whenever called upon. Van Dijk sees the new arrivals, such as Ekitike and versatile midfielder Florian Wirtz, as excellent additions but feels the club still needs more attacking firepower to compete at the highest level.
The centre-back also acknowledged Liverpool’s solidity in defense, featuring himself alongside Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez, but highlighted that a forward capable of competing with the existing attacking options remains a top priority. Liverpool have reportedly been linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who is interested in a move to Anfield. While a deal for Isak would come at a high cost (£120–150 million), it reflects Liverpool's determination to upgrade their forward line significantly.
Van Dijk’s vocal call for attacking reinforcements underlines the club’s strategic focus on balancing the squad with world-class talent both offensively and defensively following the summer’s active transfer activity. As Liverpool aim to challenge on all fronts in the upcoming season, securing the right forward signings will be crucial to achieving those goals.
