Brighton boss Chris Hughton reckons Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is on course to become a Premier League defensive great like John Terry or Sol Campbell... but insists he’s not there yet.

“But at the moment Virgil van Dijk is a great role model.

“Is Van Dijk that level of player?

Van Dijk has been possibly the stand-out player of the season at Anfield, and faces Albion at the Amex this weekend in top form.

So if you’re talking about an influence on our game and history, then those players have done it for a longer time and Van Dijk hasn’t yet.” That’s not to say Hughton won’t admire the 27-year-old, who had two and a half seasons along the south coast at Southampton before his move last January, when Liverpool face his lads on Saturday: “If you look at all the aspects of what you want in a centre-half: good in the air, comfortable with the ball at his feet, good enough pace, he has all those qualities.” Brighton have their own Van Dijk, too.

“What Van Dijk is to Liverpool, that’s what our two are for us,” he said.

In fact, Hughton reckons they have two — in centre-back duo Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk.
