Virgil van Dijk has described Liverpool as "such a special place" as he sent his love to the city following Monday's devastating incident.

The Liverpool FC captain says "Liverpool, I love you" as the city has united to get through the difficult time.

What started as a joyful day of celebrations came to a harrowing end.



Moments after the open-top bus parade, a car ploughed into a crowd of pedestrians on Water Street, injuring 79 people.

Virgil has issued a statement sending his love to the city following the incident.

Taking to Instagram, he shared a selection of snaps of him holding the trophy as the bus made it's way down The Strand.

He captioned the post: "The way the city came together before and after everything - is what makes it such a special place.

Liverpool, I love you!" Fans rushed to the comments to post a number of red love heart emojis following the player's heartfelt statement.

Yesterday, van Dijk sent a message to victims on social media, declaring: 'We are all with you'.

The Liverpool defender, who will leave the club at the end of his contract this summer, shared a picture of the Liver Building surrounded in red smoke from the parade.

On Tuesday, he wrote: "My thoughts are with the whole city, especially all affected by yesterday's devastating events.
