Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has offered his congratulations to former Manchester United striker Memphis Depay after the forward became the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer during the September international break.

Going into the game against Lithuania during World Cup qualifying, Memphis was tied on goals with former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Robin van Persie.

Predictably, the striker received numerous congratulatory messages regarding his accomplishment, including one from Van Dijk.

Nevertheless, following 53 appearances and two seasons at the club, the striker managed to secure merely seven goals and five assists before being transferred to Ligue 1 side Lyon.

In France, Memphis rejuvenated his career, netting 76 goals in 178 appearances, which led to a move to Barcelona in 2021 after a four-year stint with Lyon

However, his time in Spain was less than stellar at both Barca and Atletico Madrid, and he was let go by the latter in 2024.

His tenure at the Madrid club marked the end of his European journey, as the forward made a switch to Brazilian team Corinthians in September

Despite a promising start in Brazil, Memphis' goal tally has dwindled this year, though he has maintained impressive performances for his national side.

During their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, which kicked off in July, Memphis has already scored five goals, including a historic double against Lithuania on Sunday.

Memphis' senior international career started back in 2013, helping the Netherlands finish third at the World Cup in 2013.
