Virgil van Dijk skippered the side against Burnley as the Reds went on to claim a 3-1 win at Anfield this past weekend.

It was important for Liverpool to get back on track after droppings points at the Emirates.

Goals from Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez sunk the Clarets despite the scores being level at half-time.

It was a hard fought victory for the Reds, and important goals for the confidence of Diaz and Nunez.

The Reds maintain a two-point gap at the top of the Premier League table, ahead of Manchester City (who have played a game less) and Arsenal.

One of the negatives were that Trent Alexander-Arnold went down withy an injury – with Jurgen Klopp confirming that it a knee issue.

Curtis Jones was tasked to fill in at right back, and do so admirably.

However, the Liverpool skipper revealed that he thought 20-year-old Harvey Elliott really made an impact off the bench.

What did Virgil van Dijk say?

Speaking to, Virgil van Dijk lauded the impact Harvey Elliott had off the bench after replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Elliott provided some nous and trickery in midfield, and assisted Darwin Nunez’ goal.

Virgil van Dijk said spoke on the number of injuries the Reds have to contend with as well the England under-21 international:

“It is not ideal but we have to adapt and that’s football.”

“Whoever is going to be on that pitch has to perform, that is what we all expect as well.”

“We are in the middle of a very intense period with games on the very highest level and pressure.”

“Everyone has to be ready to perform.”

“Very, very impressed [with Elliott] and Curtis when he went to right-back.”

“It’s very important for these guys that when they have their moments, Harvey in this case, they grab them with both hands.

We need them.”

“Even if you start on the bench, you have to be ready to make an impact.”

“This was a great example of that again.”

“This season there has been a lot of players who have come from the bench and made a difference

That’s what we need.”

Harvey Elliott growing in confidence

Elliott is nearing 100 Liverpool appearances despite arriving as a teenager from Fulham in 2019.

He also spent time on loan at Blackburn during his Anfield career, making the achievement more impressive.

Having been limited to many appearances off the bench this season, the 20-year-old will be itching to nail down a starting spot in the line-up.

Elliott is still so young, yet he has managed to achieve so much in his Liverpool career so far.

Despite middling numbers this season (one goal and three assists across all comps), there’ s no doubt he is growing in confidence and ability.
