Virgil van Dijk’s fresh message amid the Alexander Isak saga has grabbed attention, with the Liverpool captain naming the Swede as one of the Premier League’s toughest strikers.
The comments come at a time when transfer tensions between Isak and Newcastle United continue to dominate headlines.
Liverpool saw a £110m bid rejected earlier this summer and although no follow-up offer has been made, both the club and the striker share a desire to work together.
Isak has since gone public with frustration at Newcastle’s stance, prompting a strong response from the Magpies.

Speaking on the PFA’s TikTok live during the 2024–25 awards ceremony, Van Dijk was asked to name the most difficult forwards he has faced in recent years.
The Dutchman listed Erling Haaland, Alexander Isak, Ollie Watkins and Harry Kane, pointing out the unique challenge each provides.
“Everyone has a different challenge against them,” Van Dijk explained.
“I respect everyone that is playing in the Prem because it’s the hardest league in the world.”
The Liverpool skipper’s praise for Isak only adds more intrigue to ongoing speculation.
With the transfer of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez out if Liverpool this summer, Van Dijk has openly called for reinforcements in attack, while Arne Slot has admitted that “at least one” new forward is needed.
For now, Liverpool remain linked almost exclusively with Isak, but the striker’s standoff with Newcastle could complicate matters.
The Magpies, angered by his public stance, are reportedly even more determined to resist a sale.
Van Dijk’s message shows the respect he holds for Isak, but it also underlines why Liverpool fans view the Swedish striker as a perfect addition.
