Vitor Pereira’s contract situation could be about to take another twist as another of Wolves’ stars is linked with a late exit this summer.

The Old Gold have already lost Matheus Cunha to Man United, Rayan Ait-Nouri to Man City, and Nelson Semedo on a free transfer, but with those happening early on, replacements were quickly found.

Back in April, Football Insider revealed that Pereira had transfer demands to the Wolves board amid expected talks over a new deal, but no contract extension has yet been announced.

While there appear to be few concerns from inside Molineux Stadium, supporters may begin to get a feeling that not everything is going smoothly behind the scenes.

Despite several incomings, including Jhon Arias, David Moller Wolfe, Jackson Tchatchoua, and Jorgen Strand Larsen‘s loan being made permanent, Pereira’s side is, arguably, still worse off than last season.

That is due to three major outgoings, and now, according to the Express and Star (21 August), the Old Gold are facing a battle to keep the newly signed Strand Larsen amid interest from Newcastle United.

It is understood that there is only a £5million difference between the clubs’ differing valuations of the striker, with a package of £60m likely to open discussions following his £23m arrival [BBC Sport].

While that would be immediate profit for Wolves, it would go totally against what Pereira is trying to build at Molineux, and would likely make him rethink his future in the West Midlands.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Pereira could be tempted to quit Wolves for a huge European team, but so far, the Portuguese figure has remained loyal to the Premier League club.

Troy Deeney recently suggested Pereira could “walk away” from Wolves over the transfer window and this sale happening could easily be the trigger.

Selling Strand Larsen weeks after making his deal permanent would only push him towards the exit door, especially without suitable reinforcements, continuing the flow of manager changes for the club.

If Pereira decided to stay, losing the 25-year-old, who notched 14 goals and five assists last season, would only increase the chances of Wolves being relegated from the Premier League with a string of poor results.

In either scenario, the manager would need to be replaced, whether he decides to leave himself or the club feels someone else could do a better job this season.

It may seem like a drastic set of events, but with the current squad being largely stripped of all its talent over the summer, Strand Larsen’s move to St James’ Park could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
