‘Want to clarify’: Nunez’s Liverpool future takes another twist as Napoli make big decision – Romano

Liverpool will need to make some big sales this summer and their attack looks like the area that will recoup them the most money.

The Reds’ forward line has been a key topic of interest in recent months, with the futures of almost all of them uncertain at one point in time.

Firstly it was Mohamed Salah as he may have left on a free transfer, then Cody Gakpo was wanted briefly by Bayern Munich, and now the futures of Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez are still up in the air.

The latter appears the closest to the Anfield exit and Nunez is reportedly keen to join Napoli, with the Italian outfit in regular contact with Liverpool to try and seal a deal.

The Reds’ club-record signing has had a lacklustre three seasons at the club and both parties are ready to call it quits, however Fabrizio Romano’s latest update suggests that there could be a delay in this actually happening.

Many of Europe’s elite are in the market for a top striker and although there are plenty of options, the price tags that many are placing above their stars’ heads are putting most off.

This is causing a lot of teams to look elsewhere for cheaper alternatives, something Romano confirmed that Napoli are doing if Liverpool persist with their overly-optimistic asking price for the Uruguayan.

“I also want to clarify something on Darwin Nunez as I’m getting many questions,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“Napoli’s interest remains and he is still their priority target, but Napoli are also working on and advancing on a deal for Italian striker Lorenzo Luca from Udinese.

Because Napoli at the moment still want Nunez but feel the transfer fee is too high.

Napoli are still working on the deal, so let’s see what’s going to happen, but meanwhile they have the other option of Lorenzo Luca in their hands in case they can’t get Darwin Nunez.

The Reds are certainly shrewd operators and only negotiate on their own terms, but this transfer will go down as one of very few failures as they are almost guaranteed to make a loss.

It is entirely understandable that the Reds are desperate to recoup as much of the £85m they spent on Nunez as possible, especially as there is significant demand for his signature.

However, commanding a minimum of £55m for him still seems unrealistic and it will only put the large majority off, suggesting they should lower it and just end his Liverpool chapter here.

Nunez is also desperate to move to Napoli so doing everything they can to ensure he ends up there is also the right thing to do and will only add to the reputation Liverpool have around the world.

Of course, if they feel like they can get more money for him then it makes sense to set the asking price so high, but it feels like a lot of clubs are playing the waiting game and hoping the Reds reduce it later on in the summer, suggesting it is better to just get rid now to move forward.
