Wataru Endo is the latest Liverpool player to pay his tributes to Diogo Jota this week.

Jota and his younger brother André Silva will be laid to rest in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, following Thursday’s fatal car crash in north-western Spain.

The brothers’ bodies were repatriated to Gondomar late on Thursday after identification by family, arriving to scenes of applause, chants of “Diogo” and tears from locals and travelling Liverpool supporters.

A wake will be held today at 3 pm in the Capela da Ressurreição adjoining the São Cosme funeral parlour, offering friends, neighbours and fans the first opportunity to pay tribute.

On Saturday at 10 am local time, a funeral mass will take place at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, the town’s main Catholic church, before both brothers are interred in the municipal cemetery.

Gondomar has declared a day of municipal mourning, with flags at half-mast and local businesses closing in solidarity with the family.

The tragedy occurred just hours after the brothers’ Lamborghini veered off Spain’s A-52 highway near Zamora, killing the 28-year-old and his 25-year-old sibling, a midfielder at second-divison Portugal side Penafiel.

Reports suggest a tyre blowout while overtaking caused the accident, which remains under investigation by the Spanish Guardia Civil.

There has been an outpouring of tributes for the Liverpool icon, not just from his teammates but across the footballing community.

Taking to Instagram, Wataru Endo penned a touching message:

“Jots, I still can’t believe it.

I don’t want to believe it.

What a great player, what a great person you were.”

“From day to day, Jota and I used to sit together at the dining table and talk about football, family, games, etc.”

“Not to mention his composure in front of goal and skillful shooting inside the pitch.”

“Still can’t believe he’s gone, but the wonderful times I spent with him at Liverpool are priceless memories.”

“I’m still having a hard time sorting myself, but I hope we can all give them all the support we can for their family.”

“You will be remembered forever.

My thoughts are with your wife, kids and all family and friends.”

“I mourn the loss of both of you and offer my condolences.”

“Love you Jots.”

“Rest in peace Diogo and Andre?
