The Reds returned to Melwood on Wednesday for the first day of group training since mid-March with the Premier League set to commence next month.

The Premier League voted to resume non-contact training earlier this week after mass-testing of all 20 clubs’ playing and non-playing staff returned only six positive coronavirus infections out of 748.

Whilst players have been allowed to train, they must not breach the strict social-distancing guidelines given to them, in line with the UK Government.

Melwood has remained largely shut since the middle of March, with individual players allowed to visit the training ground and utilise the facilities by themselves.

The players are now restricted to five per session – plus the goalkeeper – with Jurgen Klopp and his staff taking charge of a handful of sessions throughout the day.

The club have taken precautions and set up several safety measures at the Reds’ West Derby base. Staff members are required to wear masks, while temporary facilities have been built to accommodate a one-way system throughout the premises.

Whilst the Reds will be gunning for the two wins that would clinch the Premier League title on their return to action, all focus – for now – remains on fitness and getting back into the swing of things after nearly ten weeks out.

“A lot of players in small groups means a lot of sessions, but we’ve had enough time to rest so we will be fine,” Klopp said.

“From a physical point of view, the boys are in a good shape, I think. Then we have to start getting used to the pitch, football boots and balls again.

“For the body that’s a big challenge because these little turns and stuff like this, these football-specific things, they make all the difference.

“Today we started with training, good things, not the highest intensity but the boys look in good shape.

“We don’t know exactly how long we have, but we have some time to prepare the rest of this season and already the next season because I don’t think there will be a massive break between the two.

“We don’t know exactly but we should prepare for a rather shorter break between the two seasons. It means that’s our training period, so use it.”
