Liverpool dropped down to second in their Champions League group on Tuesday night after a shock 2-0 defeat away at Red Star Belgrade.

And while it was a game where neither one of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or substitute Roberto Firmino played particularly well, the midfield trio of Adam Lallana, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum were equally as poor.

Looking at this season as a whole, though, the likes of Milner and Wijnaldum have both been impressive and are slowly becoming key players for manager Jurgen Klopp.

£36m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Wijnaldum, in particular, has really played well of late and is starting to develop into a quality midfielder, which may come as a surprise to many.

Back in the Netherlands, Wijnaldum played in a more advanced role for previous clubs PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord where he was able to score plenty of goals.

And it was a trend he carried over to England when he joined Newcastle United back in the summer of 2015.

In the 2015/16 Premier League season, the Netherlands international managed to reach double figures, further showing the sort of threat he poses in front of goal.

At Liverpool, though, Wijnaldum has since been moved into a deeper midfield role by Klopp where he is currently thriving. As a result, the 27-year-old is no longer getting into the sort of goal-scoring positions he used to find himself in.

However, Wijnaldum is still contributing a lot to his side with the energy he provides when it comes to pressing and his tidiness in possession, things which are clearly not going unnoticed by his German boss.

Fabinho and Naby Keita both arrived over the summer making competition for a midfield spot fierce but, so far, the former Newcastle man has easily seen off the challenge of the two with the former being the more direct competitor.

All in all, Wijnaldum has been a terrific addition to Liverpool’s squad and one who has improved Klopp’s midfield.
