'We could get something' - Ange Postecoglou reveals mindset after four-goal Liverpool onslaught

Ange Postecoglou believed Tottenham Hotspur could still take at least a point against Liverpool – even when they found themselves four goals behind after less than an hour.

And the Spurs boss played down a half-time flashpoint when goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicaro had to drag Cristian Romero away from team-mate Emerson Royal.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott had put the Reds in total control before they took their foot off the gas in the final 20 minutes and allowed substitute Richarlison and Heung-Min Son to give Tottenham a glimmer of hope in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday.

The visitors hadn’t managed a single shot on target during the first half and barely threatened until Richarlison and James Maddison were introduced after Elliott’s goal.

But Postecoglou was convinced his team had performed well despite being resoundingly outplayed during the opening hour.

“I know we were losing 4-0 but I don’t think we were playing badly and the difference was in the opposing box we lacked cutting edge against good opposition,” he said.

We scored a couple of goals and could have got a couple more.

It’s disappointing but at least we tried to play.

“At 4-0 I still thought we could get something out of the game because I knew we could finish strong, but before he (Richarlison) came on we didn’t look threatening at all.

“Maybe in the front third there’s a confidence problem.

I thought our football was good.

But we were more like ourselves at the end unlike in our last two away games where we just didn’t try to play football.

“Even in the first half I thought our football and pressing was back to where it should be.

But we lacked a cutting edge and had nothing in the front third.”

As the players left the field at half-time shortly after Liverpool had gone 2-0 up, Vicario was forced to sprint across and intervene after Romero had an angry exchange with Emerson.

And Postecoglou said: “I didn’t see it.
