Former midfielder Wesley Sneijder has offered a cautionary note to incoming Liverpool manager Arne Slot, advising him against overloading the squad with Dutch players as he prepares for his tenure at Anfield.

Slot is poised to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, with the club having reached an agreement with Feyenoord regarding compensation.

The 45-year-old has been at the helm of Feyenoord since 2021, and last season he steered the club to its first Eredivisie title since 2017, finishing seven points ahead of PSV Eindhoven.

Although trailing PSV by nine points this term, Slot recently guided the Rotterdam outfit to Dutch Cup success with a 1-0 victory over NEC Nijmegen.

Plans for the upcoming summer transfer window are likely underway, with speculation already circulating about potential reunions with former Feyenoord players at Anfield next season.

However, Sneijder, drawing from his own experience at Real Madrid, has urged caution regarding an overreliance on players from the Netherlands.

The former Dutch international’s tenure at Real Madrid serves as a cautionary tale for Slot, highlighting the potential pitfalls of favouring players from one’s own nationality.

“I would be careful with that, with bringing in too many Dutch people,” Wesley Sneijder told fcupdate.nl, (via Sport Witness)

“I experienced that in Madrid.

“When I came, only Ruud van Nistelrooy, Royston Drenthe and Arjen Robben were there.

“You shouldn’t start attracting too many Dutch people to you.”

Liverpool currently boast three Dutch internationals in their squad including skipper Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Recent speculation has tentatively linked the club with Lutsharel Geetruida, a defender, and these rumours gained traction when Geetruida was spotted attending Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium over the weekend.
