Liverpool is undergoing what appears to be a significant summer clear-out under manager Arne Slot, as several high-profile and fringe players prepare to leave Anfield.
The most notable of these is defender Jarell Quansah, who is nearing a move to Bayer Leverkusen for a fee potentially rising to €41 million (£35 million).
Attacking midfielder Harvey Elliott is also set for a fresh challenge, with Brighton & Hove Albion reportedly readying a £40 million bid.
Elliott, who struggled for consistent starts under Slot, is eager for more game time and could be persuaded by former Liverpool teammate James Milner to join the Seagulls.
Meanwhile, the likes of Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez could be set for a double move to Napoli according to reports.
Arne Slot and Co?
are not messing about in terms of outgoings.
And now John Percy of the Telegraph has reported that West Bromwich Albion are nearing a deal to sign Nat Phillips from Liverpool:
“West Bromwich Albion are close to signing Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips in a permanent deal,” he wrote on X.
“Phillips has one year left on his Liverpool contract and was on loan at Derby last season.”
“West Brom’s new head coach Ryan Mason working on other signings ahead of this week’s return to pre-season.”
Most Reds fans will remember him for the 2020/21 season when a devastating injury crisis saw Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip all ruled out for extended periods.
Only 23 at the time, Phillips was suddenly called upon to step up, making 17 Premier League appearances – often alongside Rhys Williams – to anchor a patched-together defence that managed to qualify for the Champions League that season.
However, since that standout campaign, Phillips’ career has been marked by a series of loan moves, with little sign of a clear pathway back into Liverpool’s first team.
After helping Bournemouth secure promotion in the 2021/22 season, he split the following year between Celtic and Cardiff City.
Most recently, he spent the 2024/25 season with Derby County, where he established himself as a regular starter.
Phillips has not played for Liverpool’s senior side since an FA Cup replay against Wolves in January 2023, and it now appears certain that his future lies away from Anfield.
