West Ham are lining up a shock return for a player that only left the club a few months ago as Graham Potter aims to add depth to his struggling goalkeeper ranks.

West Ham‘s aims to progress under Graham Potter this season saw them undergo an overhaul of their goalkeeping options in the summer window, with Mads Hermansen joining from Leicester City to provide competition to Alphonse Areola.

Hermansen has seriously struggled in the early stages of his West Ham career, with mistakes against Sunderland and Chelsea, while Areola put in a poor performance against Wolves when he was tasked to deputise in the Carabao Cup.

Potter has been stuck with both of them past the deadline, however, after West Ham failed in a late bid to sign John Victor before he moved to Nottingham Forest, while third-choice keeper Wes Foderingham recently moved to Aris Limassol.

The Hammers have been in clear need of another new signing to come in and bolster Potter’s options between the sticks, and now they look set to provide that as an ex-player edges closer to a surprise return.

According to a new report from talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook, via X, Lukasz Fabianski is in talks over returning to West Ham despite only leaving the club at the end of his contract in June.

The 40-year-old spent seven years with the Irons between 2018 and 2025, making 216 appearances and helping them win the Europa Conference League in 2023.

He penned an emotional statement to the West Ham fans in May upon news of his exit, saying: “I’m very grateful for everything.

It’s been an absolute pleasure, a blessing and some journey as well, because we’ve been through a lot of ups and downs,” and he now looks set to continue that journey by making a near-immediate return.

Football Insider verdict

The Hammers were poor in each of their first two league games of the new campaign, with a 3-0 opening day defeat to newly-promoted Sunderland followed up by a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea on Friday (22 August).

Graham Potter’s side were then beaten 3-2 by fellow top-flight strugglers Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday (26 August) before a surprise 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last time out, but the majority of their woes have been down to goalkeeping issues, and that seems unlikely to change drastically anytime soon.

Neither Hermansen nor Areola have covered themselves in glory so far this term, and the sheer fact that the latter was not trusted to step up to become Potter’s number one after Fabianski’s exit should tell him everything he needs to know about where he stands in his squad.

Fabianski was very reliable and commanding throughout his time at the London Stadium, hence why he was their first-choice keeper for five of his seven seasons before he neared 40-years-old.

Despite his age, if he does re-join the club soon then it should not only be as a back-up or to provide competition in training, it should be to start games, beginning with their huge derby clash against Tottenham this weekend.
