Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle striker Alexander Isak represents one of the most ambitious transfer pursuits in recent Premier League history, with the Merseyside club prepared to break British transfer records to secure the Swedish forward’s signature.

The Premier League champions have emerged as Isak’s preferred destination after informing Newcastle of his desire to explore options away from St James’ Park this summer.

Liverpool made an informal approach for the 25-year-old before signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, but their admiration for Isak hasn’t diminished despite already spending over £270 million this transfer window.

Newcastle have valued Isak at approximately £150 million, which would make him the third most expensive player in football history behind only Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

However, there is a belief that the Reds could broker a deal closer to the £120 million mark, and indeed was the figure they gave the Magpies when lodging their enquiry.

Now the Athletic has reported that even before Liverpool made their interest apparent, the Swede told Newcastle that last season would be his last campaign at the club.

George Caulkin and Chris Waugh report:

“Earlier this month, the champions communicated their interest to Newcastle in signing him for a fee in the region of £120million ($160m), which would be a record acquisition for a British club.”

“It is true that some people with strong connections to Newcastle believe this to be pivotal in turning Isak’s head.”

“It is also true that people familiar with Isak’s thinking say that none of this should be a surprise to Newcastle and that they were told repeatedly that last season would be the player’s final one at St James’ Park, that he wished to move to a club where he could win the biggest trophies.”

“It is true that some are saying there is no turning back.

The financial implications for any deal are staggering.

When factoring in agent fees, potential add-ons, and Isak’s expected salary of £250,000-300,000 per week, the total cost over a five-year contract could exceed £250 million for Liverpool.

Despite this enormous outlay, financial experts suggest Liverpool can afford such a move due to their strong cash flow, low transfer debt, and the substantial revenue generated from winning the Premier League and participating in an expanded Champions League format
