Liverpool know this better than most.
Giovanni Leoni’s setback has created a potential opening in Arne Slot’s squad plans, and the name that immediately stands out is Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa has worked hard to stay relevant in a squad loaded with attacking talent.
Since arriving from Juventus, he has often been behind Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and Mo Salah in the pecking order.
Last season he managed only 14 appearances in all competitions and even missed out on the Champions League squad this year.
Yet his recent displays show why he should not be overlooked.
With the campaign about to get busier and key fixtures ahead, Leoni’s absence could have a direct impact on squad registration for Europe.
According to an X post from James Pearce, if the injury to Leoni proves serious, Chiesa could be drafted into the Champions League squad — a chance that would instantly raise his importance to Liverpool’s plans.
Chiesa’s form and attitude suggest he is ready.
After his standout display in the 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Southampton — where he set up both goals and was named man of the match — he said, “I feel much better in terms of physical ability and I have played more this year than last year combined, so I’m happy and I have to continue on this path.”
Reflecting on last season’s struggles, he added, “It was really difficult (not playing last season) but I don’t think I was at the level the coach wanted me to play.”
“I understood his choices.
This year, it is different.”
“I feel better physically and mentally.”
“The coach has seen this and given me more opportunities.”
Being left out of the Champions League squad was another test.
“He told me what he was thinking and why he chose to do what he did,” Chiesa explained.
“Of course I was sorry that I am not part of the Champions League squad, as to play in it is every player’s dream?
I just said to the coach ‘okay — no problem.
“I will keep working hard and I will get my chances in the Carabao Cup and the Premier League.’ I am a professional player, I play for Liverpool and to do that is amazing.”
If the defender is ruled out long term, Liverpool may replace him in the Champions League squad with Chiesa.
Given his improved form and determination, the Italian forward looks ready to seize that chance.
