Liverpool’s 2024/25 Premier League title victory was built on a foundation of defensive resilience – and at its heart stood Ibrahima Konate.
The French center-back delivered a career-defining campaign, combining physical dominance, tactical intelligence, and leadership to solidify a backline that was crowned English champions with four games to spare.
Konate started 26 league matches, his highest tally since joining Liverpool in 2021.
Despite his centrality to Liverpool’s success, Konate’s contract talks have hit an impasse.
His current £80,000-per-week deal expires in 2026, and negotiations opened in October 2024 have failed to bridge the gap between his demands (£200,000 weekly) and the club’s valuation.
It has been claimed that Paris Saint-Germain is prepared to meet these terms, offering the added lure of captaincy and a return to his hometown.
His age (25) and ceiling as a world-class defender make him a strategic asset.
A prevailing theory among analysts and fans alike was that Konate is awaiting clarity on Van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold before committing his future.
And now 2 out of three have committed terms to Anfield, many have been hopeful that the Frenchman will commit terms.
But speaking on Sunday, those terms seem far away from reaching a positive conclusion
When quizzed on the prospect of a new deal with Liverpool, Konate kept his cards close to his chest:
“New deal.
This is a conversation with the club, and we will see,” he said to Canal+ on Sunday.
He added on the day as a whole:
“It was unbelievable, honestly.
What we felt was unprecedented,” the Frenchman said of the festivities outside Anfield on Sunday.
“The players in the team bus were not even in their usual spots.
I have no words to describe it.”
“Although there are a couple of games remaining, we steamrolled the league, and it’s done, eh?”
