TalkSPORT reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed what Liverpool are waiting for before they make a formal bid for Alexander Isak.
Isak to Liverpool has become one of the major stories of the summer.
The Reds had identified the Swedish striker as one of their options for the No.
He has since rejected a new deal from Newcastle and has set his mind towards a move to Liverpool.
Things have now gone even more interesting with Liverpool’s transfer balance set to be boosted by the sale of Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich.
The Colombian is set for a £65-70m move to the Bundesliga giants, and his exit means the Anfield club can now go all in on Isak.
The 25-year-old’s absence from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia has only intensified speculation, despite official claims of a thigh injury.
Eddie Howe’s recent comments have revealed the precarious nature of the situation.
Speaking to reporters in Singapore, the Newcastle manager admitted there are “things going on behind the scenes” and confirmed there is “no chance” of Isak rejoining the squad for the remainder of their Asian tour.
A formal bid is expected from Liverpool soon, with Newcastle fearing a bid from the Reds.
However, the Reds are waiting for the green light from Newcastle before they bid for Isak.
Speaking on the latest episode of the talkSPORT transfer window podcast, Ben Jacobs revealed what will happen before Liverpool bids for Isak.
“Newcastle are braced for a Liverpool bid for Alexander Isak,” he said.
“Liverpool are intent on signing him, but it’s step by step.
It won’t be blind.
“Liverpool want to bid with confidence, which means that Newcastle almost have to inform them… that may happen if they get a replacement, knowing they have got an unhappy player.
“Isak to Liverpool is expected to develop.
Even when they signed Ekitike, the door was still always open for Alexander Isak.
“I’m getting almost fear from Newcastle sources but caution from Liverpool ones.
I think rather than going immediately and blindly from Liverpool’s perspective, they will first look for that encouragement from Newcastle.
“So if Liverpool bid, it will be because Newcastle have gone from ‘not for sale’ to reluctant sellers.
“Whilst the window is open, Isak doesn’t want to sign a new deal at Newcastle?
If that number is £300k per week, it’s one that Liverpool can afford.”
