There is a new update in Liverpool’s well reported interest in German midfield star Florian Wirtz.
The Reds became linked with a move for the 22-year-old this month after surprising reports that he had travelled to Liverpool alongside his parents.
Manchester City were initially thought to be among the only Premier League club with concrete interest in the Bayer Leverkusen man.
However, Liverpool were said to have hosted him and his representatives ahead of a potential move to Anfield this summer.
Even more interesting now is that Manchester City have now pulled out of the race for Wirtz, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool the leading clubs in the race for the Germany international.
For Liverpool’s part, they have escalated their pursuit of Wirtz, with German outlet BILD, claiming that some of Liverpool’s chiefs have travelled to the US to hold discussions around the signing of the player yesterday.
The Reds are said to be prepared to shatter their transfer record with a bid exceeding £126 million (€150 million) to meet Leverkusen’s possible valuation.
Despite this bold move, Bayern Munich remain self-assured.
Sporting director Max Eberl publicly stated Wirtz is “free to visit” suitors, a comment interpreted as confidence in their longstanding position as favourites.
With Bayern and Liverpool now in what seems to be a two-way tussle for Wirtz, according to the latest report from Germany, one factor has held the transfer to a standstill till now.
Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that Liverpool and indeed Bayern Munich are still ‘waiting’ to know if Wirtz has decided to leave Bayer Leverkusen this season.
Per the journalist, Liverpool have made the Germany international their No.
However, the Reds have not sent in any official offer for the midfielder as there is still no word from Wirtz about his decision to stay or leave Leverkusen this summer.
“Florian Wirtz remains Liverpool’s absolute dream target for the number 10 role,” the journalist wrote on X.
“LFC are maintaining contact with the Wirtz family and Wirtz himself — as are FC Bayern.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no official offers have been received by Bayer 04 Leverkusen?
Internally, Wirtz still hasn’t informed Leverkusen of his decision?
