Liverpool’s planned transfer of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace collapsed at the last minute due to Palace’s inability to secure a replacement for their club captain.
Throughout the 2025 summer transfer window, Liverpool pursued Guehi as a key target, aiming to strengthen their defense after winning the Premier League title for the 2024/25 season. The clubs agreed on a £35 million fee (over $46 million), including a 10% sell-on clause, and reports indicated a deal was close to completion. However, Crystal Palace insisted they would not sell Guehi without first signing a replacement center back.

Efforts to bring in Igor Julio, a center back from Brighton, failed — Igor underwent a medical at Palace but ultimately moved to West Ham instead. This collapse in Palace’s replacement plans forced them to pull out of the deal despite having a deal sheet submitted and an agreement in place. Consequently, Liverpool missed out on finalizing Guehi’s transfer before the deadline.
This turn of events leaves Guehi, who has only one year left on his Palace contract and shows no interest in extending it, likely to remain at the club for the current season. However, there is a strong chance he could leave next year as a free agent, which could mean Palace losing out on a significant transfer fee they might have gained from a summer sale.
While Liverpool successfully completed the signing of Alexander Isak, the failure to secure Guehi represents a major blow to their transfer plans. Crystal Palace fans have mixed feelings, benefiting from retaining their captain but facing the risk of losing him for free next year.
