What Michael Edwards thinks of the signings Liverpool made after he left in 2022 - journalist

When Michael Edwards decided to leave Liverpool in May 2022, many supporters feared for the worst.

The 44-year-old had created a reputation for himself as one of Europe’s finest operators in the transfer market during his first stint at Anfield, finding some absolute bargains for Jurgen Klopp.

In particular, the £34m deal for Mohamed Salah and the £8m signing of Andy Robertson were particularly shrewd signings, as was the £34m capture of Sadio Mane.

However, Liverpool’s transfer activity became a little more erratic after Michael Edwards left.

Now – after he returned as the new CEO of Football at Liverpool – the man from Southampton’s thoughts on those signings have emerged…

Well, Liverpool made a number of significant – and expensive – signings after Edwards left.

With Julian Ward in charge of transfers – and then Jorg Schmadtke for the 2023/24 campaign after Ward resigned – Liverpool made the following signings.

Edwards – according to François Plateau – has not been impressed with some of these signings.

In fact, the French journalist even claims that Liverpool’s new CEO of Football wants to sell some of the aforementioned names, to find players better suited to whoever replaces Klopp.

We highly doubt Liverpool will look to sell the likes of Nunez and Szoboszlai so soon – given how much money was invested and their flashes of clear talent.

However, Gravenberch and Carvalho could leave Anfield this summer.

Galatasaray are hoping to sign the Netherlands international – according to Fotomac in Turkey.

There are also question marks about Carvalho’s future on Merseyside, after Liverpool showed a willingness to sell him permanently to RB Leipzig in January before settling on a loan move to Hull City.

Whatever happens this summer, Liverpool fans can relax a little when it comes to transfers, now Edwards is back at Anfield overseeing recruitment operations.
