Michael Edwards was in attendance at Old Trafford on Sunday as Liverpool eventually succumbed to a defeat to archrivals Manchester United.
The manner in which Liverpool lost would have stung, with plenty of opportunities to kill the game in regular time.
Scott McTominay’s first goal was cancelled out by Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, giving Liverpool a 2-1 lead at the half.
Things were looking up for the Reds before a lack of cutting edge in the final third eventually became their downfall.
Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo gave their side a historic victory at Old Trafford in extra time after Antony’s goal forced extra time – with the clash finishing 4-3.
Edwards, who was announced as FSG’s Head of Football operations last week, was in the Old Trafford directors’ box to witness the surprise defeat to traditional rivals Manchester United.
He was spotted alongside Liverpool legends in Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush.
Following his appointment as Liverpool’s sporting director in 2016, the football club saw an era of success that Edwards helped to usher in.
He oversaw the signings of players that would go on to become legendary figures in Liverpool’s history, including Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Andy Robertson, and Mohamed Salah.
However, in 2022, Edwards decided to leave Anfield and he has never truly been replaced at the club – hence why Liverpool were so eager for him to return.
What was Michael Edwards spotted doing?
According to Andy Hunter of The Guardian, Edwards ‘gave a resigned smile’ that was in ‘utter disbelief’ that Liverpool were not victorious on the day and heading to yet another Wembley appearance.
Additionally, Edwards was reportedly spotted in conversation with Sir Dave Brailsford at the start of the second-half.
Brailsford is the chief sporting director to Sir Jim Ratcliffe – with Ratcliffe recently acquiring a 25% stake in Manchester United.
Nevertheless, Liverpool have a chance to make things right at Old Trafford when they take on Manchester United in the Premier League on April 7.
In the context of this season’s title race, that fixture next month is more important than the FA Cup quarter-final loss – and hopefully the Reds can learn from the lessons of Sunday to take into next month.
