Milos Kerkez had a day to forget against Burnley as the Liverpool defender was withdrawn after just 38 minutes by Arne Slot.

The Hungarian had been booked midway through the first half for simulation - with the Reds' head coach then acting swiftly to replace the left-back after he later committed a foul.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher slammed the defender as 'absolutely stupid' following that incident during commentary for Sky Sports, while Slot would admit that the £40m summer signing was 'not smart' for diving.

Kerkez was seen engaging in a brief exchange with Slot on the side-lines after being taken off.

And the Dutchman later revealed that the defender had been adamant that he felt contact before going to ground.

"I said already to him that it wasn't smart," he said.

But let's be clear, it wasn't a penalty!"

Andy Robertson replaced Kerkez against Burnley, and is now well-placed to start ahead of the Hungarian against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

The Scotland international leapt to the defence of his new team-mate at Turf Moor, but admitted he wanted to reclaim his starting berth.

Kerkez looked subdued as he exited Turf Moor through the mixed zone on Sunday afternoon after his latest outing for Liverpool was brought to a premature end.

In contrast, departing alongside the defender, Mohamed Salah took great joy in walking past reporters with a beaming smile while they were conducting an interview with Alisson Becker, well-aware he would not be on the receiving end of any requests as a result.

Meanwhile, Salah made sure to have a little fun at the defender's expense during their journey back to Merseyside.

Kerkez fell asleep during the Reds' journey home, with Salah wasting no time in taking a picture of the Hungarian dozing and uploading it to his Instagram story.

Salah scored a 95th minute winner for Liverpool for Burnley from the penalty spot, but his work did not stop there on Sunday.

Only hours after his strike, the 33-year-old was working hard on his aqua bike back at home as he uploaded a short video of himself exercising in his swimming pool before sharing a selfie.

Salah has scored two goals and recorded an assist from four Premier League outings so far this season to help fire the Reds to the top of the Premier League table with an 100 per cent winning record.

Yet despite such a return, both Liverpool and the Egyptian superstar are yet to find top form.
