Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah is on the cusp of breaking yet another Premier League record, one that has stood in place for over 20 years.

The Egyptian has enjoyed an outstanding season, with Salah breaking multiple records at Anfield this campaign.

28 goals and 18 assists have made for a mind-blowing return this term, playing a crucial role in helping Liverpool claim their 20th top-flight title, also wowing pundits such as Michael Owen in the process.

Now, as we approach the final two games of the season, Salah has the opportunity to break a record originally set by Thierry Henry during the 2002/03 season, and one which was matched by Kevin De Bruyne throughout the 2019/20 campaign.

Although goal scorers usually receive the lion’s share of glory, recent years have seen appreciation grow for those who provide assists.

The Premier League record for assists in a single season stands at 20, and is held by Henry and De Bruyne, but Salah has posed as an emerging threat to their achievement throughout this term.

Most assists in a Premier League campaign:

Thierry Henry (2002/03)20Kevin De Bruyne (2019/20)20Mesut Özil (2015/16)19Mohamed Salah (2024/25) 18Frank Lampard (2004/05)18Kevin De Bruyne (2016/17)18Cesc Fabregas (2014/15)18Cesc Fabregas (2007/08)17Eric Cantona (1992/93)16Kevin De Bruyne (2022/23)16

The Reds’ forward has been sitting on 18 assists for a month now, last setting up a teammate in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over West Ham United.

Mesut Ozil also still ranks above Salah in the history books, with the German providing 19 assists for Arsenal as the Gunners finished runners-up to Leicester City in the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.

Despite needing just two assists to match the record, Salah’s playmaking capabilities seem to have dried up in recent weeks.

MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES

In fact, the Egyptian has only scored once in his last seven games, providing just a singular assist in that timeframe too.

It could be argued that motivation for the winger has naturally dipped since clinching the league title against Tottenham, with the dip in form also coinciding with Salah signing his new contract to keep him at Anfield next season.

Two games remain for the 32-year-old to break the record, with Brighton and Crystal Palace making up the opposition.

Curiously, Salah failed to record an assist in the return fixtures against both opponents earlier this season, which could prove to be a telling omen for the forward’s chances of securing the record.

With time now truly of the essence, Salah may never have a similar opportunity to break this long-standing record.

As a result, the Egyptian may throw caution to the wind during his final two fixtures, in pursuit of cementing his name further into English football’s history books.
