What Newcastle are doing to make Isak change his mind over Liverpool move and whether it's working - Ornstein

Liverpool have seen an opening offer to sign Alexander Isak rejected by Newcastle.

The Reds made their intention to make a bid for Isak clear to Newcastle in mid-July, and finally followed through on Friday.

It is the latest instalment of what has become a fascinating transfer saga, as Isak looks to push through a dream move to Anfield.

Newcastle have remained determined that the Swede is not for sale, however, and despite Isak failing to travel for their pre-season tour this summer, appear to be sticking to their guns.

Furthermore, after breaking the news that Liverpool have had a first bid rejected for Isak, journalist David Ornstein has revealed whether the Magpies are beginning to change the striker’s mind about departing.

Writing for The Athletic on Friday afternoon, Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool had seen a ‘formal’ offer turned down by Newcastle.

The Toon are reportedly sticking to their stance that Isak is not for sale come what may this summer.

And the journalist also reports that Newcastle have been going even further, and are attempting to convince the player to change his mind about leaving.

In order to do this, Newcastle are claimed to have offered Isak a new contract, with a release clause included to come into effect next summer.

The offer has been turned down.

‘Senior teammates’ are also said to have been deployed in an attempt to sway Isak into doing a U-turn over his decision.

However, these tactics have also reportedly been rejected by the Sweden international, who is said to remain unchanged in his stance, which has been ‘made clear to Newcastle’ for some time.

Although Ornstein does not initially confirm how much Liverpool have offered to pay for Isak, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was on hand to let the world know.

“Liverpool opening bid for Alexander Isak was worth £120m package plus add-ons,” Romano posted on X.

“Newcastle rejected as they won’t open doors at least until finding a replacement… and it’s not guaranteed, at this stage.

“Isak insists with Newcastle on his clear desire to join Liverpool.”

With neither Newcastle nor their star player changing their messaging here, it is clear that something has to give.

If Liverpool come again, it may be harder for the Magpies to stand firm.
