Unai Emery is looking forward to Aston Villa’s first European match of the season despite a winless start to the campaign.

Criticism has been aimed at Emery for Aston Villa‘s disastrous start which has seen them knocked out of the Carabao Cup and in the Premier League relegation zone.

Aston Villa’s 1-1 draw at Sunderland did little to ease the pressure as Emery’s side played against 10 men for over 50 minutes at the Stadium of Light.

A trip to Bologna in the Europa League may be a welcome distraction from league matters for Emery following the resignation of Monchi at Aston Villa.

As per Matt Maher on X, [24 September], “Emery was in pretty upbeat mood at Bodymoor Heath,” and “literally laughed off speculation around his own future.”

Emery though admitted “meetings” were had after the Sunderland result, as per the Express and Star, [24 September].

“More speculation!

But I know it’s different speculation,” Emery laughed off.

“The reality is that in the league we are not performing well.

“I had meetings after the match on Monday, we are speaking openly about how we build a team.

“Our commitment to everything is towards tomorrow in the Europa League, it’s exciting to be back in Europe.”

Emery is believed to be safe from the sackk at Aston Villa, though that position may be tested if positive results are not forthcoming.

Aston Villa go into the Europa League as one of the favourites for the competition after making the quarter-finals of the Champions League last season.

Emery though goes to Bologna, another team in the Champions League last season, potentially happy to take a point amid Aston Villa’s poor start.

Stars like Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins need to return to form, and signings Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho will need to make an impact.

Issues need to be rectified defensively, so Emery faces a host of problems to contend with as their European journey begins.

Emery though has plenty of pedigree in the Europa League though having won the competition four times previously.
