Vincent Kompany’s phone call to Nicolas Jackson and the reassurance he offered proved vital in convincing the striker to move to Germany this summer.

The Senegal international found himself on the outside looking in at Stamford Bridge, following Chelsea’s signing of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap.

The 24-year-old was knocked down to third in the pecking order at striker and was linked with a move to Newcastle, but Jackson ended up agreeing to join Bayern Munich on loan.

Chaos ensued when Chelsea cancelled Jackson’s loan deal after he had arrived in Germany because of an injury to Delap, but the deal was revived and then completed on deadline day.

Despite Man United target Harry Kane being the clear first-choice at the Allianz Arena and other options likely offering more guarantees of first-team football, a conversation with Kompany was key to the former Villarreal striker’s decision to move to Bavaria this summer.

Jackson enjoyed a strong start to last season as Chelsea‘s first-choice striker but his performances trailed off in the second half of the campaign.

As a consequence of scoring just one Premier League goal in 2025, the Blues prioritised finding a replacement for the striker and his exit this summer always seemed inevitable.

The striker market was incredibly competitive in the window just gone, and alongside Bayern and Newcastle, Liverpool and Aston Villa both showed an interest in Jackson.

However, the Daily Mail reports that a conversation with Kompany was crucial for his move to Germany.

Jackson’s agent, former Fulham striker Diomansy Kamara, said: “The most important thing was the manager.

Vincent Kompany rang him.

“He knows exactly how Nico works and removed the pressure of goalscoring.

It will be a marriage for the short, medium, and long term.”

Kompany was not the only former Premier League great with whom Jackson and his camp conferred before his move to Bavaria.

Former Liverpool icon Sadio Mane spent a season in Munich before his move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

Kamara revealed that a conversation had been had with the Senegal legend, and the 33-year-old recommended that the former Chelsea man “express his identity” during his time with Bayern.

In the second half of last season, and during the Club World Cup, Jackson cut a frustrated figure and the 25-year-old was sent off against Newcastle and Flamengo.

However, he will now have the opportunity to wipe the slate clean and restart at a club that, beyond Kane, is severely lacking in striking options, and will surely give him a platform to come good on the promise that has made him one of the world’s most well-thought-of number nines.
