‘What is he doing?’: Jamie Carragher simply couldn’t believe what £35m Liverpool player did vs Everton tonight

Jamie Carragher was left absolutely flabbergasted by one moment in Liverpool’s incredibly tame loss to Everton tonight.

Jurgen Klopp must have been shocked himself at how weak the Liverpool players often were in their duels considering the context of the game.

The match not only represented Klopp’s last chance to beat Everton as manager at the club, but was also paramount to his bid to win a final league title.

Perhaps Liverpool have now conceded that chance unless there really are some big shocks to come.

Ultimately, Klopp’s side just couldn’t match their title-rivals defensively, they’ve just been too open at times.

Virgil van Dijk seemed to be doing his utmost to inspire a change in mentality this evening, trying to galvanise a comeback, but it never came to fruition.

That being said, Jamie Carragher was watching the game in the Sky Sports studio.

And when reviewing Jarrad Branthwaite’s opening goal for the hosts, he was baffled by some of the defending he witnessed.

Speaking at half-time, Carragher spoke at length about how poor Liverpool had been in their aerial duels and felt as if a goal had been coming.

The pundit was particularly shocked by Ibrahima Konate’s role in the opening goal, given the £35m-defender lacked any real conviction when making contact with the ball.

Reviewing Branthwaite’s opener, he said: “They look like scoring on every single one [set piece].

The amount of times Liverpool have given fouls away in their own half.

“Konate here, I mean what is he doing?

He doesn’t know where he is, just sticks a leg out at it but Everton definitely deserve to go in front.

“They deserved to get a goal from a set-piece.

The naivety of Liverpool in terms of how you play a derby game.”

Of course, tonight was a very disheartening way for Liverpool to bow out of the title-race, if that is indeed what happened.

It’s not mathematically over just yet, but the Liverpool players certainly looked defeated on the bench at the end of the game.

Of course, once the dust has settled, a lot of thoughts will now be looking towards next season.

And to that end, one Dutch journalist has just claimed that Arne Slot to Liverpool is a ‘done deal’.
