Trent Alexander-Arnold’s 20-year association with Liverpool will conclude this summer after the 26-year-old confirmed his departure from his boyhood club on Monday morning.

Barring an unprecedented surprise, the right-back will join Real Madrid on free transfer – with Los Blancos trying to negotiatie to allow the Anfield club to release Alexander-Arnold in time for the Club World Cup.

Fan reactions have been polarized.

While some accept his personal ambition, others criticize the move as a betrayal, particularly given his status as a homegrown “Scouser in our team”.

Jamie Carragher encapsulated the sentiment, stating, “His legacy as ‘one of our own’ diminishes with this move”.

There has been debate around what could or should happen to the Trent Alexander-Arnold mural on Sybil Road.

Erected in August 2019 and a minute’s walk from Anfield, it became an instant landmark.

Commissioned by Liverpool podcast The Anfield Wrap and painted by French artist Akse, the artwork commemorated the defender’s role in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph.

It features Alexander-Arnold’s iconic quote: “I’m just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true” alongside a tribute to Fans Supporting Foodbanks.

The 26-year-old’s move to Madrid has naturally ignited debate over the mural’s fate.

The mural’s proximity to Anfield makes it a target for vandalism.

But the Liverpool Echo have come out to report that there are currently no plans to remove or change the mural as things stand.

Speaking at the unveiling at the time in August 2019, Alexander-Arnold said:

“The main message that kids should gather from me and my story is that anything is possible.

“Anything can happen—because I was once that kid in a Gerrard or Carragher shirt.

“They were the local players, and they made me feel like anything could happen?

It wasn’t the players who came in from elsewhere; it was the local lads who showed me that it’s possible to live your dream.”

The mural’s fate will ultimately hinge on whether Liverpool chooses to preserve history or prioritize present allegiances.

But once the dust is settled and Alexander-Arnold is officially a Real Madrid player, perhaps the view may change.
