Luis Diaz departure from Liverpool has been months in the making, with the Colombian winger having grown increasingly frustrated with his contract situation at Anfield.
The 28-year-old had been pushing for a significant wage increase.
Liverpool made two separate attempts to agree to a contract extension with Díaz, but both failed due to the substantial gap between the club’s offers and the player’s demands.
The situation became more complicated when Barcelona emerged as serious suitors for the Liverpool star.
Díaz had been following FC Barcelona on Instagram and even met with Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo in Ibiza during the summer break, fueling speculation about a potential move to Camp Nou
However, Barcelona’s financial constraints meant they were unwilling to meet Liverpool’s valuation, with the Catalans reportedly not wanting to exceed a €65 million price tag for the winger.
This opened the door for Bayern Munich, who had been persistently pursuing Diaz throughout the summer transfer window.
The turning point came when Diaz was granted permission to leave Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia.
He was notably absent from the Reds’ 4-2 friendly defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong on Saturday, with manager Arne Slot confirming that the player was left out due to ongoing transfer speculation.
With a transfer widely reported as being agreed, details of the Colombian’s announcement have now emerged.
According to a report Kerry Hau of Sky Germany, the Colombian international has signed a four-year contract with Bayern Munich, with an option for an additional year, and will earn an annual salary of €14 million.
Most significantly, Diaz will be officially presented as a new Bayern Munich player on Thursday
His debut could come as early as Saturday in Bayern’s friendly match against Olympique Marseille.
This transfer represents the third-largest sale in Liverpool’s history and Bayern’s third most expensive signing ever, trailing only Harry Kane (€95 million) and Lucas Hernández (€80 million).
For Liverpool, it provides profit on their original €49 million investment when they signed Diaz from Porto in January 2022.
The move brings an end to his three-and-a-half-year spell at Anfield, during which he scored 41 goals in 148 appearances and helped Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
His most prolific season came under Arne Slot, where he netted 17 goals across all competitions, often playing as a false nine.
