The Reds remain on the hunt for the German's successor, with Michael Edwards and new sporting director Richard Hughes heavily involved in the appointment process.
Hughes will officially start work this summer after being appointed last month, having left fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.
It will be my job, working with Michael and leading the football operations team already in place, plus the wider staff at the AXA Training Centre, to make good decisions."
It appears a key appointment has been made to his team, with David Woodfine set to return to Liverpool as assistant sporting director to Hughes, reports journalist Neil Jones.
It was at the now-League One club that Liverpool's former sporting director met Hughes too.
Woodfine left the club at the end of last season, a year after Edwards had departed as sporting director, reports Training Ground Guru.
Transfer involvement
According to The Athletic, Woodfine is credited for helping create pathways from academy football into the first team.
Ward would only spend a year in the 'senior' position himself and was then replaced by Jörg Schmadtke.
While assistant to Edwards, Ward was trusted to lead on a number of transfers and contract talks.
Arsenal appointed an assistant sporting director to Edu last year, with greater responsibility given to former scout Jason Ayto.
Liverpool.com says: Such is the demand on sporting directors, it makes logical sense to have assistants in place in an attempt to push the club forward.
