Alan Hansen was once a revered pundit for Match of the Day.

Here we take a closer look at Hansen and his reasons for leaving the media.

During an illustrious 14 years at Anfield, Hansen, now aged 69, clinched 25 significant titles, including eight First Division championships and three European Cups, reports the Mirror.

After hanging up his boots in 1991, punditry was a seamless transition for the composed ex-defender, leading to him joining Match of the Day a year later.

His time on the show was iconic as his days on the pitch.

Even after he claimed a Manchester United side, that went on to win a Premier League and FA Cup double, was going to struggle by playing youngsters such as David Beckham and Gary Neville, Hansen's reputation remained intact.

Nonetheless, over ten years ago, Hansen felt it was time to step away from the limelight.

On his decision to leave Match of the Day, Hansen said: "The guys at the BBC know me and I said, 'Look, this is categorical.

However, he was subsequently discharged to continue recovering at home.

Since then, Hansen has returned to enjoying life, participating in leisure activities such as golf, and seemed in high spirits when receiving his MBE for services to football and broadcasting at Windsor Castle earlier this March.

Whilst some might have assumed Hansen was simply seeking respite after more than 20 years on television, he revealed in a 2016 interview that his step back from the spotlight was due to "crippling" anxiety.

Alan Hansen has spoken candidly about the stresses he faced during his time as a Match of the Day pundit, revealing that his nerves became unbearable.

"There was no training, it was sink or swim," Hansen said.

The BBC were terrific, I loved the people and Match of the Day but I didn't enjoy the nerves."

His fellow pundit and former host, Gary Lineker, corroborated Hansen's account, saying: "He was incredibly nervous, which is why he quit.
