Alexander Isak was conspicuously absent from Newcastle United’s training session on Wednesday morning, as the fallout from his controversial summer conduct continues to escalate.
The Sweden international, who has been the subject of intense Liverpool interest throughout the transfer window, did not join his teammates at Benton Training Centre for the scheduled group session this Wednesday morning.
Isak’s absence comes after a turbulent few weeks that began when he missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, ostensibly due to a minor thigh injury.
However, rather than recovering at the club’s facilities, the striker flew to Spain where he trained privately at his former club Real Sociedad’s Zubieta base.
Eddie Howe found out about his trip through the media.
The move was seen by many as a clear signal of his desire to explore transfer options, particularly after Liverpool had made their interest known.
Upon Newcastle’s return from their Far East tour on Monday, Isak reported back to the training ground and has been undertaking individual rehabilitation work since.
He was present for solo sessions on Monday and Tuesday morning, keeping himself separate from the main group.
But now Craig Hope of the Daily Mail has revealed why the Swede was called for Newcastle’s first group training session since coming back from South Korea.
He reports that Eddie Howe instructed Isak to only come to the training ground after the team training session and the specially arranged lunch with the player’s families.
“Eddie Howe has stood firm on his stance over Alexander Isak’s conduct after excluding the want-away striker from training and a family day with the Newcastle squad,” wrote Hope.
“The striker, who wants to join Liverpool, has been told to report to the training ground later on Wednesday, after a special team-building lunch involving the players and their families has finished.”
“You have to act in the right way,” Howe stated while still in Seoul.
“We will make sure that any player does that, to earn the right to train with the group.
No player can expect to act poorly and then train with the group as normal.”
The situation has been complicated by Liverpool’s persistent interest in the striker?
