Federico Chiesa has not been called up to the Italy squad for this September international break despite widespread reports suggesting he would be.

The 27-year-old has changed his fortunes on Merseyside for the better, having been excluded from Liverpool’s pre-season tour this summer.

It was starting to look bleak for the Italian, but his late winner against Bournemouth has changed the situation.

Chiesa is now coming off the bench more regularly, with Arne Slot even admitting he is seeing a new Chiesa regarding his fitness.

And it seems that the former Juventus man is desperate to not undo all his good progress at Anfield – even at the expense of playing for the Italy national team.

Gennaro Gattuso, speaking in selection press conference, has revealed that Chiesa does not feel 100% still, and explained they made the decision together.

“I spoke with Chiesa, and we made the decision together,” Gattuso said as quoted by Football Italia

“He didn’t feel ready to come back because he wanted to be at 100%
