The Athletic journalist James Pearce has revealed why Federico Chiesa has been omitted from the travelling squad for Liverpool’s pre-season tour to Asia.
Liverpool named a strong 29-man travelling squad for the pre-season trip to Asia, ahead of games against AC Milan and Yokohama F?
Marinos.
The Reds had begun their pre-season games last Sunday with a match against Preston North End.
They also held a behind-closed-door pre-season match at the club’s AXA Training Center today (Sunday) against Stoke City.
Incidentally, Chiesa was part of the game against the Potters on Sunday, scoring as the Reds ran out 5-0 winners.
After the game Liverpool staff and players departed for their pre-season tour to Asia.
However, Chiesa was conspicuously absent from the 29-man squad that featured summer signings Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.
The initial thought was that the Italian had been omitted from the squad due to the uncertainty around his future.
Chiesa has been linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer, with Serie A side Napoli thought to be keen on landing him.
However, the latest decision from Liverpool to exclude him from the travelling party is nor related to his future.
According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, Chiesa’s omission is down to a ‘minor fitness issue.’
Taking to X, to post Liverpool’s travelling squad, the journalist also posted a follow-up clarifying post on Chiesa that read: “Chiesa misses the trip due to a minor fitness issue.”
