Liverpool have officially completed the signing of Giovanni Leoni on a permanent transfer from Parma.

The Reds announced the signing of the centre-back on Friday evening ahead of the Premier League clash against Bournemouth.

A deal worth an initial £26 million has been agreed between Liverpool and Parma to make Leoni the eighth signing of what has been a busy summer at Anfield.

The Reds have now taken their summer spending past the £320m mark, with Leoni putting pen to paper on a six-year deal that runs until the summer of 2031.

Leoni is expected to be in attendance at Anfield for Liverpool's Premier League opener against Bournemouth this evening.

However, the 18-year-old will not be available to be in Arne Slot's matchday squad for the clash against the Cherries.

This is because Liverpool did not complete the signing of Leoni before the Premier League's registration deadline.

Clubs are required to officially register their new signings by 12pm on the last working day before their next match in order to have the player available for selection.

In this case, Liverpool would have needed to register Leoni by 12pm on Thursday to have the defender available to face Bournemouth this evening.

Thanks to Liverpool getting the deal over the line now, though, Leoni could make his debut for the Reds against Newcastle United on August 25 in the Monday Night Football.

An Anfield debut could come a week later when Liverpool face Arsenal on August 30 in their final match before the summer transfer window closes.

"I'll watch the game (Bournemouth) in the stadium, see the game and then after the game it's a new journey," Leoni said after signing for Liverpool.

"I'm very happy to be here.
