After finalising the British record £125million signing of Alexander Isak, Liverpool shifted their focus to Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi but were ultimately unable to get a deal over the line.
In the process, Gomez emerged as a target for several clubs.
Brighton made a late move to secure the 28-year-old, with his versatility across defence particularly appealing to head coach Fabian Hurzeler.
AC Milan also registered their interest, while Crystal Palace attempted to take Gomez on loan as part of negotiations for Guehi.
However, Liverpool had no intention of sanctioning a temporary exit for their long-serving defender.
Brighton’s push also collapsed, despite Gomez’s ability to operate both at centre-back and right-back, ticking a number of boxes for the Seagulls.
Although he remains behind the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in Arne Slot’s defensive pecking order, Joe Gomez still has a valuable role to play for Liverpool this season.
The England international made a huge impact off the bench in the 1-0 victory over Arsenal, recording more clearances than any other Reds player (seven) and winning all three of his aerial duels.
Last season, however, Gomez’s progress was disrupted by two hamstring injuries, restricting him to just nine Premier League appearances.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed why the move to Brighton did not materialise this summer.
Romano said: “There was a strong possibility of this move happening, but the deal collapsed as there were some complications regarding the coverage of the salary.”
