His deal at Anfield expires in the summer, and he will move to the Spanish capital once it ends.

However, there is still a way the Reds could pocket a transfer fee.

Real Madrid are set to play in the Club World Cup, starting in June, and if they want Alexander-Arnold to be involved, they would need to agree a fee with Liverpool.

This is because, when they start their campaign, the Englishman will officially still be under contract at Liverpool.

This means sporting director Richard Hughes and co can demand a payment from the Spanish giants to release the 26-year-old.

A report in The Sun suggests that Liverpool are looking for Los Blancos to pay them €1 million, which is around £850,000, to let Alexander-Arnold leave two weeks before the expiry of his contract.

talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs understands that Real are willing to offer around £500,000 to get the deal done, so some negotiation is going to be required.

Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool's best-ever players

If Real Madrid and Liverpool agree a deal on compensation, it's possible Alexander-Arnold will make his debut in just over a month.

This is because Real get their Club World Cup campaign underway against Al-Hilal on June 18.

If all goes to plan, that might be the first time we see Alexander Arnold in a Real Madrid shirt after 20 years with his boyhood club.

Should the two teams fail to reach an agreement, Alexander-Arnold would have to wait until after the Club World Cup to make his debut, and it would probably be in pre-season later this year.

talkSPORT react as Trent Alexander-Arnold announces he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season

In an emotional video, Alexander-Arnold confirmed he was leaving Liverpool.

In the video, he said: "After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season.

"This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.

"I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No.20.

"This club has been my whole life – my whole world - for 20 years.

From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever.

I will forever be in debt to you all.

"But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally.

"I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here.

"From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody – my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters - for the last 20 years.

"I’ve been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all.

My love for this club will never die."
