Everyone watching on last night will have seen that Real Madrid forward, Vinicius Junior, was the best player on the pitch as Los Blancos saw Liverpool off 3-1.

The young Brazilian scored twice and was buzzing around the pitch all night. A constant attacking threat, Vinicius put in the sort of performance that had many comparing him to Neymar when he did sign for Madrid.

For Liverpool, it was a case of simply being unable to handle a young, energetic, and highly-rated talent. Madrid clearly targeted the side where Trent Alexander-Arnold was, and Vinicius, at times, exposed the England man’s defensive frailties.

But while any 3-1 loss in Madrid is going to be hard to take, Liverpool fans might be stung by this one that little bit more given their club has been linked with a move for Vinicius Junior over the last few months.

  Liverpool wanted Vinicius Junior

Things like this happen in football. We see it so often when someone leaves a club. They come back to haunt their former club. And while this is different, it was bound to be Vinicius that caused Liverpool’s downfall last night.

It was only a few weeks back that AS Diario claimed Vinicius might be sold to fund moves for the likes of Haaland and Mbappe. Further, back in January, AS also claimed that Liverpool had expressed a desire to sign Vinicius, with a £38m deal being mentioned.

Looking at last night’s display, however, Liverpool would now seem to have no chance of landing the Brazilian. Madrid surely won’t be selling the 20-year-old, even if it did help fund a move for a Haaland or Mbappe.

For Reds fans, it was a case of what might have been and a glimpse into exactly why Jurgen Klopp has had Vinicius watched. Time will tell, of course, but this looks like being one that got away for Liverpool.
