Aston Villa could step up their interest in Borussia Bremen star Romano Schmid following fresh concerns over one of Unai Emery’s biggest stars.

Villa are facing competition from West Ham and Fulham for the 25-year-old’s signature, having become a key figure in the Bundesliga, notching nine goal contributions in the league last season.

His stats have been consistent ever since making the move from Austrian side FC Liefering in 2019, and could now be given a route to the Premier League at the age of just 25.

Football Insider understands that Unai Emery has £50million to spend this summer, and with the Austrian international available for just over £13m, it seems like a no-brainer decision at Villa Park.

If the Villans needed any more reason to become active in the transfer market, a blow to Morgan Rogers‘ start to the 2025/26 campaign should certainly sound a few alarms over the coming weeks.

While the 23-year-old’s injury is not thought to be serious, after leaving the pitch after just three minutes against AS Roma on Wednesday, 6 August, the manager cannot afford to take any chances, with further tests being ordered [Jacob Tanswell].

Rather cruelly, the Villans missed out on Champions League football on goal difference last season, which has left the club in a tricky financial situation, one which has limited their activity in the transfer market.

However, with supporters not fully sold on Emi Buendia despite his performances in pre-season, Schmid looks to be an absolute bargain, and one who has performed at a very high level over the last few campaigns.

There is no doubt that Rogers outperformed the latter in terms of goals and assists, notching eight goals to Schmid’s five and 10 assists to Schmid’s four, but his underlying stats would see him become an incredible addition.

The Villa man recorded an Expected Assists (xA) of 5.24 in the Premier League while the Austrian recorded 8.83, suggesting that Schmid was lacking a potent striker to slot away his passes in the final third [FotMob].

Bremen’s top goalscorer in the Bundesliga was centre-midfielder Jens Stage with 10 goals, but with Ollie Watkins in the same position, the England international tucked away 16 and even missed 27 big chances – the most in the entire league.

Schmid could have the season of his life creating for the Villans, having made 16 more chances than Rogers in 300 fewer minutes on the pitch, and that is without analysing his defensive abilities.

Rogers is often asked to track back by his manager, but the fanbase knows that his talents lie further up the pitch, whereas the Bundesliga star ranks better in successful tackles, blocks, interceptions, and possession won in the final third per 90 minutes [FotMob].

All signs point towards the 25-year-old being the perfect addition, should Rogers be sidelined for a long-term period, and even if he isn’t, Schmid would add some much-needed firepower to the final third at Villa Park.
