Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially announced his departure from Liverpool after a 20-year association with the club, paving the way for a blockbuster free transfer to Real Madrid this summer.
The 26-year-old right-back, whose contract expires on June 30, revealed his decision in an emotional social media statement on Monday, marking the end of an era for one of Anfield’s most iconic homegrown talents.
In a heartfelt video posted on social media, Alexander-Arnold described the choice as “the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” emphasizing his desire to “experience a new challenge” and push himself “professionally and personally”.
He thanked fans, teammates, and staff, stating: “This club has been my whole world.
From the Academy right through until now, the support I’ve felt will stay with me forever”.
The announcement followed his 352nd appearance for Liverpool, a tenure that yielded two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and six domestic cups.
Many Liverpool fans have been curious as to why he decided to make the announcement this week with the amount of noise going on.
However, Paul Joyce has now reported that he did not wait until the last day of the season or the parade as he did not want to be viewed as a ‘coward’.
Writing for the Times, the Merseyside reporter asserted:
“There has been criticism of Alexander-Arnold for not speaking publicly sooner about his intentions?
For a period, he simply avoided making a decision, the matter weighing heavy on him, but he has not been disruptive.”
“He has clarified his plans now, rather than waiting until after the title parade on May 26 for example, as he does not want to be viewed as a coward who sneaked out the back door.”
“Over the next three games, he will have to face the fans and deal with the consequences.”
While no contract has been signed, advanced negotiations with Real Madrid are nearing completion, with a six-year deal expected to be finalized.
The Spanish giants initially approached Liverpool in January with a £20 million offer, which was rejected as the Reds prioritized their Premier League and Champions League campaigns.
Madrid’s urgency stems from their FIFA Club World Cup campaign starting June 15, though Liverpool could demand a nominal £850,000 fee for an early release.
