I'd need to write a full series to explore all of these ideas fully, so for now, this article serves as a brief explainer for those who may not be entirely aware.

Throughout its recent history, Liverpool has existed with a different mindset compared to large parts of the rest of the country.

The austerity program, driven by the Conservative Party, has seen cuts to local councils across the country, but none more so than Liverpool, which has lost £816 ($993) in per-person, per-day funding since 2010 (correct as of August 2019).



In comparison, Oxford council, located in the predominantly conservative-voting south-east of the country, has seen an increase of £115 ($140) per person, per day.

Boris Johnson, a recent prime minister, previously edited and published an editorial column in The Spectator which labeled Liverpool as a "self-pity city", and suggested Liverpudlian people "wallow in their victim status." At his first Prime Minister's Questions, Liverpool MP Maria Eagle asked Johnson to apologize to the people of Liverpool for those comments?

To this day, plenty of away supporters who visit Anfield, even ones who support clubs with similar working-class backgrounds, taunt Liverpool fans with chants about being 'victims' or perennially unemployed

We all have common enemies, but allow them to divide us, instead of uniting against them.

The message of the anthem itself is the kind of nauseatingly deferential guff that flies in the face of the solidarity which defines Liverpool and working-class people generally

Why would anybody choose to take 60 seconds out of their day to bellow their best wishes to somebody who has access to untold riches and the kind of healthcare that will keep them alive for years anyway?

Those who either do not understand Liverpool supporters' decision to boo the anthem, or choose to pillory it out of bizarre allegiance to a flag alone, are completely ignorant of the city's political history and social background.
